Grasshoppers Have Ears on Their Abdomen
Grasshoppers' auditory organs, called tympanal organs, are located on the sides of their first abdominal segment, not on their head.
About this fact
These 'ears' consist of a pair of membranes (tympana) that vibrate in response to sound waves. Behind each tympanum is an air sac and sensory cells that convert the vibrations into nerve impulses. This system allows grasshoppers to hear the songs of other grasshoppers, which is important for mating and detecting predators.
