The Milky Way Galaxy Will Collide with Andromeda
In about 4.5 billion years, our Milky Way galaxy is predicted to collide and merge with the neighboring Andromeda galaxy.
About this fact
The Andromeda galaxy is currently approaching the Milky Way at a speed of about 110 kilometers per second (70 miles per second). While the galaxies will merge, individual stars are so far apart that direct collisions between stars are highly unlikely. The merger will eventually form a new, larger elliptical galaxy, sometimes nicknamed 'Milkomeda.'
