Neil Armstrong Had to Fill Out a Customs Form After Returning from the Moon
Upon returning from their historic moon landing in 1969, Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 crew had to fill out a U.S. customs form, declaring 'moon rocks and moon dust samples.'
About this fact
It might seem comical, but standard procedure required the Apollo 11 astronauts to declare their extraterrestrial cargo. The form, dated July 24, 1969, lists their flight route as 'Cape Kennedy, Florida - Moon - Honolulu, Hawaii.' Under 'Cargo,' they declared 'Moon rock and Moon dust samples.' The section for 'Any other condition on board which may lead to the spread of disease' was marked 'TO BE DETERMINED,' as they were immediately placed in quarantine.
