Olympus Mons on Mars Is the Largest Volcano in the Solar System
Olympus Mons is a shield volcano on Mars that is nearly three times the height of Mount Everest and about the size of the state of Arizona.
About this fact
This colossal volcano stands about 25 kilometers (16 miles) high and has a diameter of roughly 600 kilometers (370 miles). Its immense size is partly due to Mars's lower surface gravity and lack of tectonic plate movement, which allowed lava to accumulate in one spot for billions of years. Olympus Mons is now thought to be largely dormant.
