Only a Few Thousand Stars Are Visible to the Naked Eye
Despite the Milky Way containing billions of stars, only about 5,000 to 9,000 are bright enough and close enough to be seen without a telescope from Earth.
About this fact
From any single point on Earth, under perfectly dark skies, you can typically see about 2,000 to 2,500 stars at any given time. The total number visible over the entire celestial sphere (both hemispheres) is estimated to be between 5,000 and 9,000. Light pollution in urban areas drastically reduces this number, often to just a few hundred or less. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, contains an estimated 100-400 billion stars.
