Planets Made of Diamond May Exist

Astronomers theorize that some carbon-rich exoplanets could have geological conditions that form vast quantities of diamond, potentially making up a significant portion of the planet.

About this fact

Under extreme pressure and temperature, carbon can form diamond. Some exoplanets orbiting other stars are thought to be very rich in carbon. If such a planet has the right conditions in its interior – pressures millions of times Earth's atmospheric pressure and temperatures of thousands of degrees – a large portion of its carbon could crystallize into diamond. One such candidate is 55 Cancri e, though its exact composition is still debated.
