The Moon Is Slowly Drifting Away from Earth

This gradual recession is caused by the transfer of Earth's rotational energy to the Moon's orbital energy through tides. As Earth's rotation slows down (making days longer), the Moon gains energy and moves to a higher orbit. This process has been happening for billions of years and will continue. In the distant past, the Moon was much closer to Earth and appeared larger in the sky.
