Bubble Wrap Was Originally Invented as Wallpaper
Bubble wrap was invented in 1957 as a textured wallpaper, but it failed commercially and was later repurposed as packaging material.
About this fact
Engineers Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes created bubble wrap by sealing two plastic shower curtains together, hoping to create a trendy textured wallpaper. When that failed, they tried marketing it as greenhouse insulation. That also flopped. It wasn't until 1960 that they found success when IBM started using it to protect their computers during shipping. The product that was once destined for living room walls became one of the most popular packaging materials in the world, and popping bubble wrap became a beloved stress-relief activity.
