Figs Contain Dead Wasps
Most figs contain the remains of fig wasps that died inside the fruit during the pollination process.
About this fact
Figs have a unique relationship with fig wasps in what's called obligate mutualism. Female fig wasps crawl inside figs to lay eggs, but in doing so, they lose their wings and antennae and become trapped inside. The wasp dies within the fig, and the fig produces enzymes that break down the wasp's body. Male fig wasps (if they develop) mate with females and then dig tunnels for the females to escape, but the males die inside the fig. This process is essential for fig reproduction, and technically means that most figs contain digested wasp remains, though they're completely broken down by the time the fig ripens.
