Trivia

The Tallest Mountain

While Mount Everest is the highest mountain above sea level, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain from base to peak, with most of it being underwater.

About this fact

Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii, stands at 4,207 meters (13,796 feet) above sea level. However, when measured from its base on the ocean floor to its summit, it reaches an astonishing 10,210 meters (33,500 feet), making it taller than Mount Everest (8,848 meters or 29,029 feet from sea level). The vast majority of Mauna Kea's mass is submerged, contributing to its immense height from base to peak. Its summit is also an ideal location for astronomical observatories due to its high altitude, dry air, and minimal light pollution.
