Venus Flytraps Are Native to a Tiny Area

Venus flytraps naturally grow only in a small region within 100 miles of Wilmington, North Carolina, and nowhere else in the world.

About this fact

Despite being one of the most famous carnivorous plants, Venus flytraps have an extremely limited natural habitat. They grow wild only in the coastal wetlands of North and South Carolina, specifically in a roughly 100-mile radius around Wilmington. This area provides the perfect combination of nutrient-poor, acidic soil and high humidity that Venus flytraps need to thrive. The plant evolved to catch insects to supplement the nutrients lacking in these bog soils. Outside of this small region, Venus flytraps exist only in cultivation. Their restricted range makes them vulnerable to habitat destruction and climate change.
