Why Chocolate Is Toxic to Dogs

The reason chocolate is dangerous for dogs lies in a compound called theobromine, which is naturally found in cocoa beans. While humans can metabolize theobromine relatively quickly, dogs process it much more slowly, allowing it to build up to toxic levels in their system. Dark chocolate and cocoa powder contain the highest levels of theobromine, making them the most dangerous. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning in dogs include vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, increased heart rate, and in severe cases, seizures or even death. The toxicity depends on the size of the dog and amount consumed. Even small amounts can be dangerous for small dogs.
