Wombats Poop in Perfect Cubes
Wombats are the only animals that produce cube-shaped feces, and scientists recently discovered how they do it.
About this fact
Wombats produce distinctively cube-shaped droppings, making them unique in the animal kingdom. For years, scientists puzzled over how soft feces could form such perfect geometric shapes. In 2018, researchers discovered that wombats have varying elasticity in their intestinal walls - some areas are more flexible than others. As feces moves through the final 8 centimeters of the intestine, the varying muscle contractions and elasticity naturally shape the waste into cubes. This cubic shape serves a purpose: the flat sides prevent the droppings from rolling away on slopes, allowing wombats to mark their territory more effectively.
