Stomach Acid Can Dissolve Metal
Human stomach acid (hydrochloric acid) has a pH of 1.5-2.0, making it strong enough to dissolve metals like zinc and even damage stainless steel over time.
About this fact
The human stomach produces hydrochloric acid that is incredibly powerful, with a pH between 1.5 and 2.0 - nearly as acidic as battery acid. This gastric acid is strong enough to dissolve metals like zinc, iron, and aluminum. It can even damage stainless steel over extended periods. The acid is produced by specialized cells called parietal cells, which can secrete about 2-3 liters of gastric juice daily. This extreme acidity serves multiple purposes: it kills harmful bacteria and parasites, helps break down proteins, and activates digestive enzymes. The stomach protects itself from this corrosive acid through a thick mucus lining that neutralizes acid and repairs itself constantly. When this protective system fails, the acid can literally digest the stomach wall, causing painful ulcers. Interestingly, the stomach acid is strong enough that if you placed a razor blade in your stomach, it would be completely dissolved within a week.
